I build data-heavy web applications and lead the people who build them. Outside of that I mess with whatever has my attention: animation, hardware, race telemetry. Most of it ends up on this site.
I started in motorsport electronics, which is where the telemetry habit comes from. Every system should tell you what it’s doing, and every number on the dash should mean something. I still think about software that way.
A few aphorisms I keep coming back to:
- Nothing is more permanent than a temporary fix.
- I don’t need to be a chef to know when the food tastes bad.
- All code is bad, but not all code adds value.
- There are two hard problems in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors.
